Situated in the heart of the Poitou Charentes countryside, 60 km south of the Loire is the large, picturesque, medieval village of Airvault. Here Jo Cottrell offesr a warm relaxed welcome at 'The Voltaire' Bed and Breakfast in their 19th Century mansion home.

The Voltaire, located near the centre of Airvault, has 4 large individually styled and furnished double and twin bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. The emphasis of 'the Voltaire` is that you have an enjoyable and comfortable stay with us whether it is for 1 night, a couple of days, a week or more. The benefit from the 'soft' air and comfort of The Voltaire has resulted in guests sleeping for longer than they expected! As a result of this breakfast can be served as late as 12pm.

Each of our guest bedrooms has an en-suite bathroom with bath and shower over it. Luxuriously thick bath sheets and hand towels are supplied, together with handmade soaps. The bedrooms all have either a kingsize bed or twin single beds and are provided with 100% cotton bed linen and high thread count soft Egyptian cotton duvet covers. The mattresses are deep sprung to provide the right level of support and comfort. We can put a temporary bed in your room to accommodate a child under 12. All rooms have ample space to store or hang your clothes, as well as easy chairs.

There is also a cosy library, with an open fire lit in winter, which has a selection of books and board games available, and a sitting room styled in a cooler manner which has a more tranquil atmosphere.

Of course when the weather is suitable the outside space is there to be enjoyed. The walled garden at the rear of the property enjoys the early morning sun which provides an ideal place to enjoy breakfast on the lawn. As the sun moves round the garden goes into shade during the hottest part of the day so that it remains cooler. The area in the front of the house, where there is a raised swimming pool (warmer months only), enjoys the sun throughout the day and is a real sun trap.

Breakfast is continental with freshly locally baked croissants and baguettes, Airvault honey and homemade marmalade and conserves, fruit juice, coffee, tea and chocolate.

Evening meals are available on request, and include 4 courses, wine and / or soft drinks and coffee for 22 euros per adult and 12 euros per child under the age of 12. We try to keep things seasonal and local, so your fare will vary from day to day and according to the time of year. Should you require, we can also provide picnics with prior notice.

In this idyllic and unspoilt part of France we benefit from very high annual sunshine levels, second only to the Côte d'Azur, and the added beauty of being in the heart of the largest sunflower growing region in France.

Being on the edge of a village, with its stunning architecture, most amenities are available within a short walk, including bakeries, butchers shops, restaurants and bars, banks (with cash machines), a chemist and a market every Saturday morning selling local produce.

Surrounded by historic towns and villages, beautiful countryside and swimming lakes as well as large attractions such as Futuroscope - the virtual reality theme park, Vallée des Singes - the monkey park where you can roam with the monkeys, Puy du Fou - the medieval theme park with their various spectaculars and La Venise Verte - Marais Poitevins intricate waterway system that can be explored by flat bottomed boats. Also being only 60 km south of the Loire valley, there are the many chateaux and vineyards to be explored.
